Kesteven RFC u16 Match Report - Sunday 6th March

Kesteven 36 – 0 Skegness

Kesteven RFC u16s welcomed visitors from Skegness RFC, the first time these two teams had met.

Ks received the kick-off and moved the ball quickly into opposition territory. Within five minutes Will Lewis, standing in today at full-back, spotted a gap in the traffic and jinked through to open the scoring.

The visitors however then settled in and using their greater size and weight, stifled numerous attempts by Ks to increase the score.

In the second half Ks’ greater fitness levels and agility began to pay off. A crashing try from 15 metres out by no 4 Charlie Avison broke the dam, taking the score to 12 – 0.

Skegness to their credit kept up the pressure, at one time spending nearly five minutes inside Ks’ five metre line, but were denied a score by resolute defending and their own mistakes in the ruck. Eventually, Kesteven captain Conor McCann gathered the ball from his own clearance and ran it into the Skegness 22, setting up a phase of play leading to his first try of the game.

Further tries then followed in quick succession from hooker Angus Chambers, McCann and number 8 Cam Gabriel.

Although lacking their NLD players and a number of others through injury, Ks demonstrated strength in depth and controlled the game throughout.

Special mentions go to outside centre Evan Rees, not his usual position, but playing as if born to it; and Angus Chambers, playing his first full game of the season following ligament damage last year and marking the occasion with a try.

The game also marked the very welcome return to the squad of Daniel Coetsee, who took to the field for the first time in two and a half years following lengthy treatment for leukaemia – good to have you back Danny.

A satisfying game and one which, despite the score, tested both teams and was played in the true spirit of rugby, with good humour and mutual respect.

Kesteven: 1 George Sisson, 2 Angus Chambers, 3 Conor Morrissey, 4 Charlie Avison, 5 Kyle Fischer, 6 Myles Bell, 7 Sam Molesworth, 8 Cameron Gabriel, 9 Greg Mihill, 10 Matt Cumming, 11 Daniel Coetsee, 12 Conor McCann (capt), 13 Evan Rees, 14 Ed Chappell, 15 Will Lewis, 16 James Mason, 20 Matt Cocks, 22 Sam Briggs.
