On Saturday the Kesteven pirates took to the field with a strong squad against Scunthorpe 5th expecting a tough encounter having played them in the Merit finals at the end of last season. Brett Login returned at hooker and it was great to see Chris Jinks and Simon Oakes take to the field to lend their experience.

From the kick off it was apparent that the game would be won and lost up front and so it was with vigour that the Pirate 8 set at dominating their opposing players in almost every facet of the game. The starting back row, of Peabody, Jinks and Hayward remeniscent of 1st xvs a couple of years ago were lively around the park and a constant source of possesion and disruption in equal measure.

Having said all this the first score came almost inevitable from the backs, who were enjoying decent supply and it was Steve Smith who finished off a move in the corner. This gave the platform for more as young scrum half Calvin Wright who impressed throughout got the first of his brace before the end of the half. Scunthorpe did manage a score of their own to keep themselves in touch.

For the second half the changes were rung to enable the large bench to all get a game. It was now the forward turn to score the points and gain just reward for all thier efforts in winning and retaining ball, with Chris Jinks inevitable bulldozing over with defenders strewn and Dougie Hayward finishing off a text book driving maul. Scunthorpe weren't finished however and scored a second try.

Nerves were settled when Calvin Wright scored his second after the Pirates had soaked up some pressure on their own line, and we won't mention Dougie Hayward should have scored his second, but opted instead to run touch in goal, oops we just did, sorry Doug.

Tom Price did well scoring a couple of kicks with many of the attemps wide out.
This was a very good outing for the Pirates against a strong Scunthorpe side who should be thanked for making the trip for a very enjoyable game.

For Kesteven, the key to the game was the ball won upfront, with the likes of Login, Dolan, Peabody, Jinks and Hayward prevelent in this. In the backs Tom Price was controlled at fly half with Calvin Wright lively and intelligent at scrum half. Ian Macallister made some scything runs throughout the first hald while he was in the game.

The Pirates will play Bourne in 2 weeks in their next Merit league game.
