In complete contrast to the previous couple of weeks 50 point hauls with full benches, the seconds lined up at Grimsby with a bare 15 man squad, not unusual for this fixture, to take on probably the largest side they will play all season. With raucous home support it was clear the blues were going to be well up for this fixture, and they didn't disappoint.

From the first kick off, K's put themselves under pressure as they failed to catch the ball and let Grimsby have the first attack through a line out. What Kesteven's 8 lacked in size, they made up for in guille and were able to turn Grimsby over in the ruck and work their way upfield. Having first used the blind side, scrum half Simon Morgan was as ever quick thinking in his play and soon had worked the opportunity to give Tyrone Miles a run at the opposition line, and he took 3 players with him to open the scoring. The conversion failed but Kesteven took heart from this and saw that the opportunities would come with patience.
The flow of the game was however stalled when Darren Blackley suffered with a challenge in midfield, and following a lengthy stop for the ambulance, Darren was taken to hospital with a cracked rib and we all wish him a speedy recovery.
It was decided to end the first half with Kesteven 5-0 to the good.

Grimsby were kind enough to lend one player and following a reshuffle the secodn half began like a dream. good rucking in midfield from Winsdsor and Miles saw quick ball to the backs and Joe Berry ran a great line to take the ball under the posts for a 12-0 lead following the conversion. More was to come as Kesteven saw where the gaps were and soon had worked an overlap for Steve Smith to sprint in to the corner for a well deserved try.
This spurred the home support onto more barracking and the home side responded with abrasive forward driving and it was no surprise that they worked an opportunity for their powerful centre to smash straight through Jack Danford for the try. Jack was injured trying to make the tackle and this saw a second member of the dog pack with his tail between his legs on the way to hospital. This time there was no player to lend the depleted side and so the Black Army played the remainder of the game with 14.

Grimsby could smell victory now and with indiscipline now creeping in to the Kesteven game the referee saw that they were sufficiently punished through penalties, which Grimsby used well to work 2 opportunities to score 2 good tries and level the score with minutes on the clock. With backs against the wall, Kesteven knew all they could do was defend and hope for the opportunity to come. Smelling victory Grimsby chose to run the ball wide for the first time in the game but a loose pass saw centre Olly Hughes intercept and run 60metres to devastate the Grimsby side and elate his own!

With the conversion kicked, the game was brought to a close for the most satisfying of victories. This game saw the type of spirit required at second team level, where belief that the victory will come if you stick to your strengths and your team mates is key. For Kesteven, Doug Hayward and Tyrone Miles kept the forwards going with Rob Windsor impressive on the back row. Olly Hughes was the pick of the backs and a deserved man of the match, showing strength that belies his size and a terrific turn of pace for his try. Special mention to Tony Smith and Roger Dent who both lasted the full 80 minutes and were cruciical in keeping the scrum solid.

Next week sees a return to home turf and league action as the Dog Pack welcome Matlock 3rds.

Team;

Smith T, Dolan P, Dent R, Harward D, Miles T, Windsor R, Dolan R, Dent M, Morgan S, Berry J, Smith S, Blackley D, Hughes O, Charles I, Danford J
