Amber Valley Version
Valley lost at home for the first time this season as Kesteven ran out deserved 13-19 winners.
Amber Valley 13 – 19 Kesteven
Amber Valley lost their unbeaten home record, as they deservedly lost to Grantham based Kesteven in Midlands 3 East North.
Valley found themselves at a loss of what to do at the start of the match, as some questionable interpretation of the mauling laws saw them give away a constant stream of penalties in the opening quarter. This gave Kesteven the opening points of the game as their 10 slotted a penalty.
Valley, still struggling with some of the referees interpretations and lack of consistency forced their way up the pitch, some strong running from the backs and another great lineout performance from the entire pack, Burditt, Leadbeater and Richter all combining well. Valleys were camped on the Kesteven line as the inevitable happened and the pack went over for a pushover try, No.8 Ben Parker coming up with the ball, conversion missed put Valley 5-3 ahead.
The game was turning into a real contest as Valley and Kesteven traded breaks and attacks. Lee Chapman again a threat from scrum half at the breakdown was creating spaces with some nice breaks, and some good distribution from the scrum set Stewart Kirkup off into space, but he couldn’t find the support and the attack fizzled out. Kesteven on the other hand had the breaks, but managed to convert, or slot penalties as they eased into an 11-5 lead. That seemed to be the difference between the sides, Kesteven taking the opportunities as they appeared, and Valley losing the ball at the vital moment as chances went begging.
A the half time break Valley felt they were very much in the game, and knew that they had to score next if they were to keep in touch, but Kesteven had the better of the opening exchanges as attacked from deep and caught out the spaces in Valleys defensive line as they scrambled to cover. Soon after, more alledged indiscretion from the home side gave Kesteven a penalty score, which was soon cancelled out but to leave Valley 2 scores behind at 19-8, a not insurmountable target with 20 minutes to go.
But Valley perhaps chased the game too much and lost some of their cohesion, again making good breaks, Dave Walters almost breaking free from a good backs move, but once again the attack broke down and Kesteven were allowed to release the pressure.
Although Valley were struggling to break down the Kesteven defence they seemed to have snuffed out much of the attacking verve from the visitors, the majority of the game played in the Kesteven half, but every time Valley got close to the tryline a penalty was given away, or turnover ball was won by the visitors.
With time ticking away Valley played some of the better Rugby of the afternoon, spreading the ball wide and looking threatening, but it wasn’t until the final play of the game that Shaun Dowdall broke through the defensive wall to score a consolation try.
Coach Tom Uniacke talking to the players after the game commented ‘We have areas to work on to improve for next week, but we have not suddenly become a poor side, we now need to re-focus and work on a gameplan to get us back to winning ways’
So Valley slip to third in the league, but still only a point off the leaders, who they have already beaten earlier in the season. A short hop to Melbourne this week will hopefully see the side return to winning ways.
Well done boys........keep it up! Have to get on with the farming now Brownie!
